Wild Dogs Ranging Map

Pilanesberg National Park showing:

  • Boma = release point for 2 adult female, 3 adult male, and 5 sub-adult wild dogs in July 1999.
  • Core area = core range of dogs during the first denning period (Sep 1999) when 5 pups were born. Peripheral area was used during this period but to a lesser degree.
  • Arrows = movements by the pack between denning periods. First the pack moved to the east in February 2000, where two dogs disappeared (probably killed by lion), and then a movement to the South in July 2000, before moving to the area of den 2.
  • Den 2 = location of second den in September 2000, where 5 pups were born.

2: Lion distribution:
Lions and dogs ranges
  • Four prides – numbers are number of adult females and number of c ubs at the time of release.
  • Male coalitions – 2 adult males with each pride; two younger

Coalitions in the south-east, and south of the park (the area not including any pride)

Lions & dogs:

Dog ranges and den site characteristics (inaccessibility) and location indicates selection for areas of low lion density.
