The Bush Shop

By Dup du Plessis
(Part 2)

In the previous article we looked at the Bluebush (Diospyros lycoides) that can provide us with toothbrushes that contains anti-bacterial compounds. As most people would prefer to have toothpaste with their toothbrushes, let’s go deeper into the bush shop to see what is available.

The Leadwood or Hardekool (Combretum imberbe) will be our next stop. The light-grey bark that is cracked into rectangular flakes and the grey-green leaves is very characteristic of this often majestic tree that can be centuries old (with radio carbon dating the age of some leadwood trees have been established as over a thousand years old).

The Bush Shop

By Dup du Plessis
(Part 1)

Just because you are in the bush does not mean that you cannot shop for toiletries! The only drawback is that it will not bring relief if you are getting withdrawal symptoms from Retail Therapy as shopping is free.

There are a variety of shrubs or trees that can be used to make an effective substitute for a toothbrush in an emergency.
